A culture of safety from the top down. At West Valley, we are proud of our longtime record of jobsite safety. Our commitment starts at the top, with our company president Mike Kelly, who attends monthly meetings of our Incident Review Committee.
We also have two full-time safety directors to conduct formal monthly inspections of every active jobsite. And on the jobsite, our site foremen hold daily tailgate meetings to review the day’s work. Today, our comprehensive Safety Program encompasses the following key elements:
Executive Safety Committee Meetings are held twice a month and updates are posted to our Total Safety Initiative (TSI) intranet website.
Incident Review Committee Meetings are conducted monthly to discuss safety related incidents and how best to prevent similar incidents in the future.
New Hire Program was implemented in 2011 to ensure that all new employees comply with West Valley’s established safety guidelines.
Foreman’s Kit provides each foreman with the resources they need to successfully complete their job while minimizing risk.
Training Enforcement ensures that all employees have completed the courses and certifications required to qualify for their job and all training is tracked on TSI.
Job Site Inspections entail unannounced inspections for all West Valley jobsite locations statewide, with data entered daily by area managers for viewing by management.
Construction Motor Vehicle and Driver Qualification Policy ensures that our current fleet of 450 licensed units of on-highway vehicles and 470 units of off-highway construction equipment are always expertly maintained and operated.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation allows us to proactively identify and mitigate safety concerns throughout all project phases: pre-bid, preconstruction, critical phase monitoring, and post construction.
Total Safety Initiative (TSI) and ContractorsDesk are West Valley’s own in-house web-based systems. Our TSI intranet is the repository for all safety related policies, updates, and communications. ContractorsDesk is our web-based collaboration platform that provides advanced billing solutions to our annual contract customers and many other timesaving applications.
Stretch and Flex Program was designed by our safety directors and an outside athletic consultant to enable West Valley crew members to “stretch and flex” before each morning shift to help avoid injury and sustain on-the-job performance.
Safety Bonus Incentive Program was created in 2002 to reward foremen, superintendents, and their direct managers with financial bonuses based on safety performance.
Emergency Safety Alerts are delivered via email to all district and division managers the moment the West Valley Safety Team learns of any critical information related to safety or accident prevention.
Employee Stop Work Authority is conferred upon every employee through our Illness and Injury Prevention Program Safety Policy, allowing them to stop work on any job in case of imminent danger, without fear of reprisal.
